Spotted
The Yellow-whiskered Greenbul is a medium-sized bulbul, easily identified by the bright yellow streaks, or 'whiskers,' extending from its gape. It's a common and widespread forest species.
Where to spot
Widespread across West, Central, and East Africa, inhabiting primary and secondary rainforests, gallery forests, and mature woodlands.
How to spot
The bright yellow 'whiskers' are the key identification feature. Look for it foraging actively in the mid-story and lower canopy. Listen for its distinctive, often churring or bubbling calls.
When to spot
Observable year-round in its resident tropical habitat. Most active during daylight hours, particularly in the morning and late afternoon.
The prominent yellow 'whiskers' are actually specialized rictal bristles, which are stiff, hair-like feathers located at the base of the beak, common in insectivorous birds.
