Spotted
The Yellow-eyed Collared Dove is a distinctive species of collared dove, primarily found in the Lake Chad basin of Central Africa. It is characterized by its pale plumage and striking yellow eyes.
Where to spot
Restricted to areas around Lake Chad, including open savannas, cultivated lands, and human settlements in countries like Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroon.
How to spot
Look for its pale greyish-brown plumage, the black half-collar, and most importantly, the prominent yellow eyes. Its cooing call is similar to other collared doves.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Best observed during the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings and late afternoons, particularly near water sources.
Its bright yellow eye-rings and irises are a unique and prominent feature that readily distinguishes it from other collared doves within its relatively limited geographical range.
