Spotted
The Rufous-bellied Tanager is a medium-sized tanager with a deep rufous belly contrasting with its darker upperparts. It prefers the subcanopy of humid forests.
Where to spot
Inhabits the mid-story and subcanopy of humid lowland and foothill forests in the Amazon basin and surrounding areas.
How to spot
Patiently observe the forest interior. Its rufous belly is a good field mark when seen in appropriate light as it moves through the foliage.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed in the quiet hours of early morning or late afternoon.
This species is often found foraging quietly in the forest mid-story, a contrast to some of the flashier, more active tanagers.
