Spotted
The Bay-chested Warbling Finch is a beautiful and localized species endemic to southeastern Brazil, named for the prominent bay-colored patch on its chest.
Where to spot
Endemic to southeastern Brazil, primarily found in humid Atlantic Forest clearings, forest edges, and disturbed scrubby areas, usually below 1,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for it in grassy clearings and shrubby edges of the Atlantic Forest. Its bay-colored chest patch is a striking identification mark. Listen for its pleasant warbling song to locate it.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal and active during the breeding season (austral spring and summer), when males are more conspicuous.
This attractive finch is a popular cage bird in some regions, though wild populations are unfortunately under conservation efforts due to ongoing habitat loss and illegal trapping pressures.
