The Yellow-bridled Finch is a robust, finch-like bird of the high Andes. Males have a gray head with a black throat and a prominent yellow "bridle" line extending from the bill over the eye. Females are duller.
Where to spot
High-altitude puna grassland, rocky slopes, and near snowfields in the Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
How to spot
Look for it on the ground in open, high-altitude habitats. The male's yellow facial markings are distinctive.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but may move to slightly lower elevations during harsh winter conditions.
This species is often found foraging at the edges of snowfields or glaciers in its extreme high-altitude environment, showcasing remarkable adaptation to cold conditions.
