Spotted
A less common but visually striking hybrid, this bird results from a cross between the colorful Wood Duck and the ubiquitous Mallard. Its appearance can be highly variable, often presenting a fascinating mix of parental traits.
Where to spot
Freshwater wetlands, wooded ponds, and urban parks where both parent species are present, predominantly in North America.
How to spot
Look for iridescent green or purple on the head (from Wood Duck) combined with a more subdued Mallard-like body. Pay attention to bill shape and color, which might be intermediate between the two species.
When to spot
Primarily during breeding season if wild, but year-round in captive or semi-domesticated settings.
Hybrids of such distinct species can exhibit a surprising mosaic of traits, sometimes even developing unique feather patterns not typical of either parent.
