Spotted
This hybrid combines the subtle elegance of the Gadwall with the more familiar Mallard. Its appearance can range from strongly resembling one parent to displaying a complex blend of mixed features.
Where to spot
Freshwater wetlands, marshes, and ponds across North America, Europe, and Asia, often found alongside both parent species.
How to spot
Look for a body shape and size similar to a Mallard but with more muted grey or brown tones like a Gadwall. Carefully check the speculum, which might be a mix of the Gadwall's white and black, and the Mallard's iridescent blue-purple.
When to spot
Year-round in resident populations, or during migration periods in migratory zones.

Gadwall-Mallard hybrids sometimes exhibit a more pronounced and colorful speculum (wing patch) than a pure Gadwall, inheriting some iridescence from the Mallard.
