The Fiji Myzomela is a small, vibrant honeyeater endemic to the Fiji Islands. Males are distinguished by their bright red face and throat against a dark body.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Fiji Islands, including Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu, and many smaller islands. It inhabits forests, forest edges, gardens, and cultivated areas, from lowlands to mountains.
How to spot
Males are identifiable by their brilliant red face, throat, and nape, contrasting with a blackish body. Females are duller but still show some red. Look for them actively feeding on nectar in flowering trees. Listen for their sharp, high-pitched, buzzing calls.
When to spot
Active throughout daylight hours, primarily feeding on nectar, but also insects and small fruits. It is a resident species, observable year-round wherever suitable flowering plants are present.
