A stunning sunbird, male Western Violet-backed Sunbirds have iridescent violet-blue upperparts and a contrasting yellow belly. Females are duller. They are active nectar-feeders, found in various wooded habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread across West and Central Africa, inhabiting woodlands, savanna, and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for it visiting flowering trees and shrubs. The male's iridescent violet back is unmistakable in good light. Listen for its distinctive high-pitched song.
When to spot
Active year-round, throughout the day, especially during the flowering season when food is abundant.
This sunbird is known for its preference for flowers with long corollas, using its long, curved bill to access nectar that other birds might miss.
