Spotted
The Western Bearded Greenbul is a large, distinctive bulbul characterized by its prominent stiff, white rictal bristles around the bill, giving it a 'bearded' appearance. It is a noisy forest dweller.
Where to spot
Found in West and Central Africa, inhabiting the understory and mid-story of primary and mature secondary rainforests, often in dense thickets.
How to spot
Look for its large size and conspicuous white 'beard.' Listen for its loud, resonant, often duetting calls, which are a key indicator of its presence. It can be seen foraging low in dense cover.
When to spot
Observable year-round in its resident tropical habitat. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon.

The stiff bristles around its mouth are thought to act as sensory aids, helping the bird to navigate and detect prey in the dense, tangled undergrowth where it primarily forages.
