The Vilcabamba Brushfinch is a recently described species, endemic to the remote Vilcabamba mountain range in Peru. It is characterized by its dusky plumage and subtle markings.
Where to spot
Endemic to a very restricted area in the humid montane forests of the Cordillera de Vilcabamba in southern Peru. It inhabits dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets at mid to high elevations.
How to spot
Requires targeted expeditions to its specific, remote highland habitat. Look for its relatively plain, dusky plumage and listen intently for its unique vocalizations, which were key to its initial identification as a distinct species.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its limited range. Best observed during early morning hours when it is most active and vocal.
This brushfinch was discovered and formally described as a new species in 2011, underscoring the incredible biodiversity still hidden in remote cloud forest regions.
