Where to spot
Found on Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti) and Jamaica, inhabiting open country, gardens, parks, plantations, and woodlands, often at lower to middle elevations.
How to spot
Its tiny size is its most distinguishing feature, making it easily overlooked. Look for a bee-like blur among flowers. Males have an iridescent green gorget and forehead. Listen for its high-pitched, insect-like buzzing calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round within its range. Most active during daylight hours, especially morning and late afternoon, when feeding on nectar.
