The Fatuhiva Monarch is an extremely rare and critically endangered monarch endemic to Fatu Hiva Island in the Marquesas. It is a small, dark bird clinging to survival in isolated forest patches.

Critically endangered and endemic to Fatu Hiva Island, Marquesas, French Polynesia, found in small, highly degraded remnant native forests.
How to spot
Observation is highly challenging due to its extreme rarity and very limited, remote habitat. Listening for calls and extreme patience in undisturbed forest fragments are essential.
When to spot
Year-round, but extremely rare. Any observation is a significant event due to its perilous status.
The ongoing threat of introduced predators and habitat alteration continues to push this species closer to extinction, making every surviving individual precious.
