The Tumbes Sparrow, also known as Stolzmann's Sparrow, is a plain, streaky sparrow endemic to the Tumbes region of northwestern South America. It prefers dry scrub and woodlands.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Tumbes region of southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru. Inhabits dry deciduous forests, scrubland, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground or in low bushes. Its streaky brown plumage and relatively plain face are typical of sparrows; listen for its simple, repetitive song.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Breeding is generally during the rainy season (January-April), when they are more vocal.
This sparrow is adapted to the arid and semi-arid conditions of the Tumbes-Piura dry forest ecosystem, a unique and threatened habitat.
