Spotted
The Savannah Sparrow is a common and widespread grassland bird, characterized by its streaked plumage, short tail, and often a small yellow spot above the eye. It's a master of camouflage in open fields.
Where to spot
Breeds across most of Canada and the northern two-thirds of the United States. Winters across the southern United States, Mexico, and Central America. Inhabits open grasslands, prairies, agricultural fields, salt marshes, and airports.
How to spot
Look for its streaked brown back, pale underparts with fine streaking on the breast and flanks, and a typically yellowish lore (in front of the eye). Its short tail often twitches. Listen for its buzzy, lisping song: 'tsit-tsit-tsit, tsee-tsee, tsee-tsee'.
When to spot
Breeds in summer (April-August). Migrates south in autumn (Sept-Nov) and north in spring (Mar-May). Active throughout the day, often seen foraging on the ground.

This sparrow has a remarkably diverse diet, eating everything from seeds and insects to small crustaceans and marine worms in coastal populations.
