Spotted
This hybrid is a cross between the large Trumpeter Swan and the smaller Tundra Swan, often displaying intermediate size and bill characteristics. Distinguishing them can be challenging in the field, even for experienced birdwatchers.
Where to spot
Where ranges of Trumpeter and Tundra Swans overlap, particularly in North America during migration or on shared wintering grounds. Rare but possible in mixed flocks.
How to spot
Look for a swan that appears intermediate in size. Pay very close attention to the bill: it might have an all-black bill like a Trumpeter but with a less distinct 'V' at the forehead, or a Tundra Swan's bill with a very small or absent yellow spot, and a gape line that is not perfectly straight. Listen for mixed calls.
When to spot
During migration and wintering periods when these species congregate in large numbers on open water bodies.
Identifying this hybrid requires careful observation of bill shape, the extent of black on the bill, and vocalizations, as size can be difficult to judge accurately without a direct comparison.
