The Thick-billed Parrot is a medium-sized, predominantly green parrot with striking yellow underwing coverts and a prominent, stout black bill. It is found in montane forests of Mexico.
Where to spot
High-altitude pine, pine-oak, and fir forests in the Sierra Madre Occidental of Mexico.
How to spot
Look for them feeding on conifer seeds, often detected by the sound of falling scales or cones. Their loud, raucous calls are also a good indicator of their presence.
When to spot
Year-round, but movements are highly dependent on food availability. Often more visible when feeding in large flocks.
