Spotted
The Tepui Toucanet is a beautiful, localized toucanet, primarily green with subtle colorful markings and a unique bill pattern. It is an inhabitant of the isolated, high-altitude tepui tabletop mountains, a distinctive ecosystem in South America. Its calls are often heard echoing through the mist-shrouded forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid montane forests and stunted cloud forests found on the tepuis (tabletop mountains) of southern Venezuela and adjacent northern Brazil and Guyana.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often deep hooting or croaking calls that carry well in the misty environment. Look for its green plumage as it forages in the canopy, often among fruiting trees specific to tepui ecosystems.
When to spot
Present year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Its calls are often more frequent during the breeding season.

The 'tepui' in its name refers to the ancient, flat-topped mountains found in the Guiana Highlands, which host a unique and highly endemic biodiversity.
