The Flores Monarch is a distinctive flycatcher endemic to the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia. Males are largely black with a white belly, while females have a rufous back.
Where to spot
Endemic to the islands of Flores, Sumbawa, Lombok, and other smaller islands in the Lesser Sundas, Indonesia. Inhabits tropical moist lowland forests and mangroves.
How to spot
Search the mid-story and undergrowth of forest and mangrove areas. Look for the contrast between its dark upperparts and white belly (male) or rufous back (female). Listen for its sharp, high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day, but often more conspicuous during early mornings.
