Where to spot
Endemic to the Osumi Islands, particularly Tanegashima and Yakushima, in southern Japan.
How to spot
Requires dedicated searching in its very specific island forest habitat. Listen for calls similar to the Japanese Robin.
When to spot
Best sought during the breeding season in late spring and summer.
Its restricted range makes it particularly vulnerable, and little is known about its specific ecology compared to its more widespread relatives.
