Where to spot
Distributed across New Guinea and its satellite islands, inhabiting various forest types from lowlands to montane regions. They forage in the mid to upper canopy.
How to spot
Look for its plain grey plumage. It can be inconspicuous, so listen for its calls, which are typically clear whistles or churring notes, distinct from the buzzing of cicadabirds within the same genus.
When to spot
Present year-round in its tropical range. Observation is most productive during the morning and late afternoon when it is most active.
Despite their name, cuckooshrikes are not closely related to cuckoos or shrikes; their name refers to a perceived superficial resemblance in appearance or call.
