Widespread in humid and semi-humid forests, woodlands, and plantations from southern Mexico south through Central and South America to northern Argentina.

Look for its characteristic spiraling climb up tree trunks. Its streaked head and throat, along with a relatively short, straight bill, are good identifiers. Listen for its high-pitched, often trilling calls.
