Steinbach's Canastero is a rather nondescript ovenbird inhabiting dry, high-altitude regions of the Andes. It's often found foraging on the ground or in low shrubs.
Where to spot
High-altitude arid scrub, rocky slopes, and montane grasslands in the Andes of southern Peru, Bolivia, and northern Chile/Argentina.
How to spot
Search rocky slopes and dry ravines. Listen for its sharp, distinctive calls. They can be shy but may become more visible if you wait quietly.
When to spot
Year-round, with most activity in the cooler parts of the day, morning and late afternoon.
