Spotted
The Lesser Woodshrike is a small, active bird with dull grey-brown plumage, a short bill, and a relatively long tail. It is often distinguished from similar species by subtle plumage differences and vocalizations.
Where to spot
Found in Southeast Asia, including parts of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Inhabits open woodlands, dry forests, and scrubland.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often rattling or sharp 'chip-chip' calls. Look for it actively moving through the mid-story of trees and bushes, gleaning insects. Its overall dull plumage can make it difficult to spot.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active throughout the day.
Woodshrikes are social birds, often forming small family groups or joining larger mixed-species flocks to forage more effectively for insects.
