Spotted
The Common Woodshrike is a small, active passerine bird with drab greyish-brown plumage, a short, stout bill, and a relatively long tail. It is highly vocal, often giving repetitive calls.
Where to spot
Widespread across South and Southeast Asia. Found in dry forests, open woodlands, scrublands, and cultivated areas with scattered trees.
How to spot
Listen for its repetitive, often ringing 'pee-wit' or 'tree-tree' calls. Look for it foraging actively in the mid-story of trees and bushes. Its drab plumage makes it blend in, so listening is key.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day, often heard calling.

Woodshrikes have a unique foraging style, often working their way through tree branches, probing bark crevices and flicking leaves to disturb and catch insects.
