Spotted
The Large Woodshrike is a medium-sized, somewhat drab passerine bird with greyish-brown plumage, a stout bill, and a long tail. It is known for its distinctive whistling calls.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Found in open broadleaf forests, woodlands, and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, whistling calls, which are often the best way to locate it. Look for its dull plumage and relatively long tail as it gleans insects from foliage or sallies for them.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day, often foraging in the mid-story.
Despite its 'shrike' name, the Large Woodshrike is not a true shrike but rather related to vangas and helmetshrikes, and does not exhibit the impaling behavior of true shrikes.
