The Pygmy Piculet is an incredibly tiny woodpecker, among the smallest bird species in its family, known for its subtle plumage of olive-brown and faint spotting. It actively forages on small branches and bamboo for insects. Its diminutive size makes it easily overlooked.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid tropical lowland forests, particularly in the understory and mid-story, across parts of the northern Amazon Basin.
How to spot
Look for its incredibly tiny size and quick movements on thin branches and vines. Listen for its extremely high-pitched, soft 'tsee' calls or almost imperceptible tapping. Requires immense patience and good hearing to spot.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most active during the early morning hours. Vocalizations are very soft and high-pitched.
