Spotted
The Spotted-breasted Thornbird is an ovenbird named for the subtle spotting on its breast, though this feature can be difficult to discern in the field. It is a resident of dry forest and scrub.
Where to spot
Dry Chaco woodlands, scrub, and open thorny habitats in parts of central South America, primarily Paraguay and Bolivia. Found in areas with dense thorny bushes.
How to spot
Locate its large, prominent stick nest. Listen for its characteristic loud, somewhat harsh vocalizations. Its behavior of foraging in dense, thorny vegetation is also typical.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active during daylight hours, with nesting activities being most pronounced during the warm, wet season.
Like other thornbirds, this species builds large, communal stick nests, providing shelter and breeding sites for multiple pairs or even other species.
