Spotted
A medium-sized, shy ibis of the African rainforests, characterized by its dark, glossy plumage and fine white spots on its breast. It is highly secretive and difficult to observe.
Where to spot
Dense tropical rainforests, swamp forests, and gallery forests in West and Central Africa.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, resonant calls. Look for its dark, iridescent plumage and the subtle white spotting on the breast. Requires patient scanning of dense undergrowth.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon, near forest clearings or edges of rivers/streams.
This ibis often forages alone or in small family groups, making it even harder to spot amidst the dense undergrowth of its forest habitat.
