Spotted
The largest species of ibis in the world, characterized by its dark grey-brown plumage, bare head and neck, and heavy, decurved bill. It is critically endangered and found in Southeast Asia.
Where to spot
Open deciduous forests, swamp forests, and rice fields near wetlands in northern Cambodia, southern Laos, and Vietnam. Very rare and difficult to find.
How to spot
Identify by its immense size, dark plumage, and bare, greenish-grey head. Extremely shy, requiring very quiet observation from a distance, often near wetlands or forest edges.
When to spot
Year-round. Best chance for observation is during the dry season (November to May) when they concentrate around remaining water sources.
This magnificent bird is the national bird of Cambodia and is facing extreme pressure from habitat loss, logging, and human disturbance.
