Spotted
The Sparrow Woodpecker is a small-sized species, named for its relatively inconspicuous size. It features a finely barred black and white plumage, pale underparts, and a reddish patch on the hindcrown of males. It is often found in open and disturbed habitats.
Where to spot
Inhabits open woodlands, scrub, gardens, and urban areas with scattered trees. Its distribution is typically across North American temperate zones.
How to spot
Look for its very small size and active movements. Listen for its high-pitched, soft calls and very light, rapid drumming, which can be easily missed. Binoculars are helpful due to its size.
When to spot
Resident year-round, active during daylight hours. Often observed foraging on smaller branches and even weed stalks.
This tiny woodpecker often forages like a nuthatch, moving both up and down tree trunks and branches with ease, and will also glean insects from foliage.
