The Spanish Imperial Eagle is a magnificent, large eagle endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. It is distinguished by its dark plumage contrasting with bright white shoulders. This apex predator specializes in hunting rabbits and is a critically endangered species.
Where to spot
Exclusively found in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), preferring Mediterranean forests, cork oak woodlands, and open landscapes with scattered trees for nesting. They require undisturbed areas for breeding.
How to spot
Identify adults by their very dark brown, almost black, plumage with distinctive white leading edges on their shoulders (scapulars). In flight, they have broad wings held flat or slightly arched, and a relatively long, straight-edged tail. Look for them soaring or perched conspicuously on trees.
When to spot
Spanish Imperial Eagles are resident year-round in their Iberian habitats. Early morning and late afternoon are good times to observe them, especially during the breeding season (February-July) when they are most active near their nests.

Despite its powerful build, the Spanish Imperial Eagle often preys on European Rabbits, which form a significant part of its diet. Declines in rabbit populations have severely impacted this eagle's numbers.
