Where to spot
Widely distributed across Wallacea (eastern Indonesia) and New Guinea. It inhabits a variety of forest types, from lowland rainforests to montane forests, and also disturbed woodlands and mangroves.
How to spot
This species can be found in a range of habitats. Listen for its characteristic cicadabird calls, which are often buzzing or trilling. Scan the mid to upper canopy, looking for its subtle grey plumage.
When to spot
Present year-round in its extensive tropical range. Observation is typically best during the early morning hours when it is most active in foraging and calling.
'Amboinense' refers to Ambon Island, where the type specimen for this species was collected, although its range is much broader than just this island.
