The Ground Cuckooshrike is a unique and largest member of its family, native to Australia. Unlike most cuckooshrikes, it is largely terrestrial, feeding on the ground.
Where to spot
Found in open woodlands, savannah, and grasslands with scattered trees across eastern and northern Australia. It prefers areas with good ground cover.
How to spot
Look for this large bird walking purposefully on the ground, often in open areas. It has an upright posture and distinctive gait. Its call is a harsh 'cherk-cherk'.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon when foraging on the ground. It is a resident species, observable year-round.

Despite its name, its robust build and ground-dwelling habits make it more reminiscent of a large shrike-thrush or a small bustard than a typical arboreal cuckooshrike.
