Spotted
This hybrid is a cross between the Snow Goose and the smaller Ross's Goose, two closely related North American species. Hybrids are common where their breeding ranges overlap, or in mixed wintering flocks.
Where to spot
Common in North America, especially in regions where the breeding or wintering ranges of Snow Geese and Ross's Geese overlap. Also found in captive collections.
How to spot
Look for intermediate size between the two species. The bill will be larger than a Ross's but smaller than a Snow's, often with a less pronounced 'grinning patch' than a Snow Goose. Head shape and overall body size should also be considered.
When to spot
Most frequently observed during migration and wintering periods (autumn to spring) in North America.

Hybrids between Snow and Ross's Geese are notoriously difficult to distinguish from pure individuals, often requiring careful observation of bill size, head shape, and the presence or absence of a 'grinning patch.'
