Spotted
This hybrid duck is a cross between the Blue-winged Teal (Spatula discors) and the American Wigeon (Mareca americana), two common North American dabbling ducks. Its plumage can show a mix of features from both parent species, making identification a unique challenge.
Where to spot
Primarily North America, especially in areas where both parent species are abundant, such as wetlands, ponds, and slow-moving rivers.
How to spot
Look for a duck with characteristics of both species: a potential mix of the blue wing patch of a teal with the wigeon's head shape, bill, or white crown patch (in males). Observe bill shape and head patterns carefully.
When to spot
During migration periods in spring and fall, when both parent species are actively moving and interacting. Can be seen year-round in some resident populations.
Hybrids like this one are often infertile, but they can still display a wide range of plumage variations, sometimes making them resemble neither parent completely.
