Spotted
This hybrid combines the predominantly white or blue plumage of the Snow Goose (Anser caerulescens) with the contrasting black and white pattern of the Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis), creating a distinct and often mottled appearance.
Where to spot
Potentially found in areas where both species co-occur, particularly in North America where Snow Geese are abundant and Barnacle Geese occur as vagrants or introduced populations, and in Europe where both are present.
How to spot
Look for a goose with a body that is largely white or pale grey with darker mottling, especially on the back or wings, combined with the characteristic black neck and white face of a Barnacle Goose. Size will be intermediate.
When to spot
Most probable during migration and wintering periods (October-April) when large goose flocks congregate.

Hybrid geese often exhibit intermediate calls, which can be confusing but also a useful identification clue when physical characteristics are ambiguous.
