Spotted
The Slaty Tanager is a robust, relatively plain tanager with overall slate-gray plumage, a somewhat rufous-tinged crown, and a stout bill. It inhabits high-elevation forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests of the Andes, from northern Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru.
How to spot
Look in the mid-story to canopy of humid montane forests, often within mixed-species foraging flocks. Its plain plumage makes it somewhat inconspicuous, so observing flock movements is helpful.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round in its range. Best observed in the mornings.
This species is known to forage actively by gleaning insects from foliage and bark in the mid-story and canopy of humid montane forests.
