Spotted
A medium-sized becard species found in the humid lowland forests of western South America. Males have a pale grey body with a distinctly darker slaty-grey cap.
Where to spot
Humid lowland forests and forest edges on the Pacific slope of southwestern Colombia and western Ecuador.
How to spot
Look in the mid-story and canopy of tall forests, often joining mixed-species flocks. The male's slaty-grey cap contrasting with a paler body is a key identifier. Listen for its high-pitched, whistled calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the early morning.
This species was once considered a subspecies of the Plain Becard but is now recognized as distinct based on vocal and plumage differences.
