Spotted

Where to spot
Subtropical and tropical forests, bamboo thickets, and dense scrub, often near water, across Southeast Asia and southern China. They are also common in captive breeding.
How to spot
Look for them on the forest floor, often near clearings or paths. Their large size and contrasting plumage make males relatively easy to spot. Listen for their crowing calls, especially at dawn.
When to spot
Best observed in the early morning or late afternoon when they forage. They are active year-round. The breeding season in spring may offer more vocalization and display opportunities.
