Spotted
A widespread and common tyrant flycatcher in South America, the Fierce-billed Flycatcher inhabits a variety of open to semi-open wooded environments. It's often conspicuous due to its vocalizations and sallying behavior.
Where to spot
Found across much of tropical and subtropical South America, from Colombia south to Argentina. It thrives in open woodlands, forest edges, savannas, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Look for it perched conspicuously on an open branch, often sallying out to catch insects. Its relatively large bill and rufous tail are useful identification features, along with its characteristic calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident across its extensive range. Most active and vocal during the breeding season, typically in the morning and late afternoon.

Despite its common name, the 'fierce-billed' descriptor refers more to its robust bill compared to some other flycatchers, rather than an aggressive disposition.
