Spotted
The Broad-billed Sapayoa is a unique and enigmatic passerine bird, superficially resembling a broadbill, with olive-green plumage and a broad, flattened bill. It is the only member of its family.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests, particularly in the understory and mid-story, of eastern Panama, western Colombia, and northwestern Ecuador.
How to spot
Look for it moving quietly through the lower and mid-strata of the forest, often accompanying mixed-species flocks. It can be quite elusive due to its subdued coloration.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during the day, often foraging in mixed-species flocks.

Genetic studies have shown that the Sapayoa is not a true broadbill but represents an ancient lineage, possibly the last surviving member of a very old New World suboscine group.
