Spotted
The New Guinea Woodcock is a rare and elusive forest bird endemic to the montane regions of New Guinea. It is a large, cryptic woodcock of dense upland forests.
Where to spot
High-altitude montane forests and dense woodlands across the central mountain ranges of New Guinea.
How to spot
Observation is extremely challenging due to its rarity, remote habitat, and nocturnal tendencies. Requires specialized expeditions to high-altitude forests. Look for its distinctive large size among woodcocks.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its resident montane forest habitat. Likely most active at night or during crepuscular hours.
This species is one of the least studied woodcocks globally, with much of its biology and habits remaining a mystery due to its remote, inaccessible habitat and secretive nature.
