Spotted
The Rusty-vented Canastero is a medium-sized ovenbird distinguished by its prominent rufous vent and subtle streaking on its underparts. It is a resident of high-Andean scrub and rocky slopes.
Where to spot
High-altitude puna grasslands, montane scrub, and rocky slopes in the Andes of Peru and Bolivia. Found at middle to high elevations.
How to spot
Its rufous vent is a key identification feature. Listen for its rapid, often accelerating calls. Look for it foraging on the ground or low in bushes, often flitting between patches of cover.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during daylight hours. Its distinctive calls are more frequent during the breeding season.
Like many high-Andean birds, it has adapted to cold, harsh environments, often seeking shelter in rocky crevices or dense shrubs during inclement weather.
