The Greater Thornbird is a large and robust ovenbird, distinguished by its warm rufous plumage and prominent supercilium. It is known for its colossal stick nests.
Where to spot
Open woodlands, gallery forests, savannas, and dry scrub in central and eastern South America. Often found near watercourses.
How to spot
Easily identified by its very large, often tree-filling stick nest. Listen for its loud, chattering calls, often given from atop its nest. Its large size and rufous plumage are also key identifiers.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout daylight hours, with nesting being a highly visible activity during the breeding season.
