Where to spot
Endemic to sandy deserts, arid grasslands, and red dunes in Southern Africa, particularly the Kalahari region.
How to spot
Scan open, sandy ground. Its rufous plumage makes it blend in very well, so look for subtle movements. Listen for its melodious song, often delivered in a display flight.
When to spot
Observable year-round. Most active during the cooler parts of the day.
The intensity of its rufous plumage varies depending on the local soil color, demonstrating a remarkable adaptation to its environment for camouflage.
