Spotted
The Rufous-winged Philentoma is a distinctive and secretive forest bird with glossy dark plumage, contrasting rufous wings, and prominent red eyes. It has a broad, flattened bill.
Where to spot
Found in Southeast Asia, including parts of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and some smaller islands. Inhabits lowland and hill rainforests.
How to spot
Patience is key. Listen for its distinctive, often melancholic 'phuu-phuu' or 'hoo-hoo-hoo' calls emanating from dense foliage. Look for its dark body and bright rufous wings in the shadows.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day, often heard rather than seen.

Philentomas are known for their preference for the mid-story of dense forests, where their dark plumage helps them blend into the shadows, making them challenging to spot.
