Spotted
The Rufous-bellied Helmetshrike is a colorful and social bird with a black head, prominent black crest, and rufous underparts, contrasting with white wing patches. It has a distinctive red bill and eye-wattle.
Where to spot
Found in Central Africa, from Cameroon to Democratic Republic of Congo. Inhabits lowland and montane rainforests and secondary growth.
How to spot
Listen for their distinctive, often chirping and rattling calls. Look for active flocks moving through the mid-story and canopy of forests. The rufous belly and red bill/wattle are good identifiers.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active throughout the day in foraging flocks.
These helmetshrikes are highly efficient predators, coordinating their movements within a flock to flush out and catch insects, spiders, and even small vertebrates.
