Inhabits humid montane forests and cloud forests, typically at moderate to high elevations in the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador.

Scan the mid-story and canopy. The rufous throat patch contrasting with its spotted body is a clear identification feature.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed in the early morning when foraging in flocks.
This tanager often joins mixed-species flocks, moving actively through the forest canopy in search of fruit and insects.
