Spotted
The Rufous-throated Leaftosser is a compact, terrestrial bird recognized by its prominent rufous throat patch. It specializes in foraging on the forest floor, using its bill to toss aside leaf litter.
Where to spot
Restricted to humid montane and foothill forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes, primarily in northern Peru and southern Ecuador.
How to spot
Listen for the rustling sounds of its foraging in the leaf litter. Scan dark, shaded areas of the forest floor, particularly near ravines or fallen debris, for a glimpse of its distinctive throat.
When to spot
Active year-round, primarily during the day. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
Its rufous throat serves as a useful field mark, helping to differentiate it from other leaftosser species in its range.
