Hudson's Canastero is a distinctive ovenbird with a rufous crown and pale supercilium, found in the temperate grasslands of southern South America. It is often quite terrestrial.
Where to spot
Temperate grasslands, open pampas, and shrub-steppes in Argentina and Uruguay. Prefers areas with tall grass tussocks.
How to spot
Look for it running quickly through tall grass or perched on a low tussock. Its rufous crown is a key identifier. Listen for its distinctive, often rapid calls, given during territorial displays.
When to spot
Year-round resident, though some populations may undertake local movements. Most active during daylight hours, particularly during breeding season.
This species is named after William Henry Hudson, a famous English author and naturalist known for his writings on South American birds and landscapes.
